Steelers vs. Chargers: All-Time Series

The Los Angeles Chargers (formerly San Diego Chargers) and the Pittsburgh Steelers have met 34 times, including three postseason games between 1971 and 2019. The Steelers have won 24 games, while the Chargers have won only ten.

The 1982 AFC Divisional Game

The Los Angeles Chargers won over the Steelers 31-28 in the 1982 playoffs. With exactly one minute to play, the Chargers took the lead for good when Dan Fouts and Kellen Winslow hooked up for their second touchdown pass and catch of the quarter on a tight end throw-back screen for 12 yards.

Dan Fouts of the Los Angeles Chargers won Offensive Player of the Year by passing for 2,883 yards in just nine games. On the other hand, his teammate, Wes Chandler, collected 1,032 yards in receptions, making him one of the best receivers in the NFL.

The 1994 AFC Championship Game

The 1994 AFC Championship game is the pinnacle of Los Angeles’ playoff history since it was when the Chargers won the AFC conference championship matchup that led them to their first Super Bowl appearance.

Although the Steelers held advantages in total games (80-47), total offensive yards (415-226), and time possession (37:13-22:47), it was the Chargers who made the big plays.

The Los Angeles Chargers beat the heavily favored Steelers, 17-13. However, the Chargers lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl, 26-49.

2019 Week 5 Highlights

Before the Steelers-Chargers Week 6 matchup, the Steelers had already lost four out of their first five games. They fell 26-23 in overtime at a home game against the Baltimore Ravens during the NFL Week 5.

During the Week 5 matchup, the Steelers were up 20-17 heading into the fourth quarter. But they got outscored 6-3 by the Ravens over the final 15 minutes before giving up a game-winning field goal during the extra time.

Pittsburgh’s quarterback Mason Rudolph threw 131 yards and a TD before leaving the game due to a head injury. His teammate, Devlin Hodges, performed well after coming into the game off the bench, going 6/8 for 68 yards through the air.

On the other hand, the Chargers lost to the Denver Broncos at home in a divisional matchup, 13-20. During the first quarter, Los Angeles gave up 14 unanswered points and never recovered despite holding Denver to just six points over the remaining 45 minutes of the play.

Los Angeles QB Philip Rivers was 32/48 for 211 passing yards but failed to throw a TD and got picked off twice. Meanwhile, Austin Ekeler led the Chargers for the receiving corps, recording a team-high 15 catches for 86 yards out of the backfield.

2019 Week 6: Steelers vs. Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers hosted the Pittsburgh Steelers for an All-AFC clash on Sunday Night Football.NBC broadcasted the matchup at Dignity Health Sports Park in California.

The Chargers were scoreless in the first round until a fumble returned for a touchdown (FRTD) was counted. In addition, absences and injuries negatively affected Los Angeles’ offensive line.

On the other hand, Pittsburgh had to adjust to losing a starting QB for the second time that season. Ben Roethlisberger had an elbow injury in Week 2, forcing second-year pro Mason Rudolf to lead.

Unfortunately, Rudolf sustained a concussion in Week 5, which put Devlin Hodges onto the field. Hodges and the Steelers team headed by Coach Mike Tomlin didn’t disappoint and won the Steelers-Chargers game, 24-17. The Steelers also recorded six interceptions.
