Raiders vs. Chargers: Greatest Moments

All-Time Series

The Las Vegas Raiders and the Los Angeles Chargers met each other 123 times, including one postseason game, between 1960 to 2020. The Raiders have recorded more wins with 66 games, while the Chargers have won 55 matchups. The two teams also tied twice, in 1970 and 1972.

1980 AFC Championship Game

In the 1980 AFC championship game, the Raiders secured a berth in Super Bowl XV. Las Vegas became the first wild card team in NFL history to win a Super Bowl. However, their journey wasn’t easy, and the final obstacle presented itself in the form of the Los Angeles Chargers.

Las Vegas destroyed the Houston Oilers, currently known as the Tennessee Titans, 27-7 in the wild card round. The Raiders then hung on for dear life to beat Cleveland Browns 14-12 in the AFC divisional playoff game. After that intense matchup, the Raiders went on to face the Chargers.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers finished the 1980 season 11-5 and won the AFC West. After defeating the Buffalo Bills in San Diego, they went on to meet the Raiders.

Las Vegas and Los Angeles split the season series, with each team winning at home. With only 6:52 minutes left in their do-or-die game, the Chargers weren’t able to touch the ball again. The Raiders’ quarterback Jim Plunkett took a knee on the final two plays of the matchup to secure the win, a trip to Super Bowl XV, and a date with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Raiders vs. Chargers: Stats Last Season

Recap: 2020 Season Highlights

Week 14

The Los Angeles Chargers trailed by a TD at halftime on Sunday Night Football but came away with a 20-17 home victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Meanwhile, Las Vegas suffered their third loss in four games last week, a 44-27 home setback against the Indianapolis Colts.

Week 15

The Chargers (4-9) visited the Raiders (7-6) for a Thursday Night Football game to kick off Week 15. The Chargers were officially eliminated from postseason contention. But this contest would still impact the 2021 NFL playoff, due to the Raiders’ status as a contender in the AFC.

The Kansas City Chiefs locked up the AFC West title when they outwitted the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, kicking Las Vegas out of the running. Still, the Raiders could have had the wild card spot if they hadn’t lost another game over the remainder of the 2020 NFL season.

Raiders’ Poor Defense

The Raiders fired defensive coordinator Paul Guenther following Las Vegas’ 27-44 loss to the Colts. Given the short week, interim defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli didn’t have much time to right the ship.

Marinelli also lost safety Jonathan Abram, defensive end Clelin Ferrell, cornerback Damon Arnette, and linebacker Nicholas Morrow. As a result, Las Vegas had a league-worst 50.8% of drives to result in a score.

Chargers: Close-Game Woes and a Promising QB

The Los Angeles Chargers have struggled with more close-game woes under coach Anthony Lynn. However, QB rookie Justin Herbert was the most efficient player of the Chargers last season.

Charger’s 30-27 OT Win Over Raiders

On December 17, 2020, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, the Chargers met the Raiders in an intense matchup. FOX and NFL Network broadcasted the NFL week game. Free streaming and podcast episodes also let avid football fans follow the exciting matchup.

The Chargers defense forced a three-and-out to start the matchup with the Raiders and let the Los Angeles’ rookie QB Justin Herbert do the rest.

Justin Herbert went 6-of-6 for 75 yards on the Chargers’ opening possession, including a 10-yard touchdown pass to tight end Hunter Henry. The 12-play, 78-yard drive included wide receiver Keenan Allen’s 100th reception of that season. He also set a career-high of 57 receptions.

The Raiders responded with a nine-play scoring drive that led to a 23-yard Daniel Carlson field goal, but QB Derek Carr suffered a groin injury. Marcus Mariota played quarterback in the second quarter for the injured Carr.

The succeeding quarters were intense. The Raiders’ Daniel Carlson attempted a 65-yard field goal with four seconds left, but the snap was no good, and the matchup went to overtime.

In the OT, the Raiders started with the ball, but three games later, Herbert punched in the game-winning score from a yard out. He finished the intense matchup 22-of-32 for 314 yards and three touchdowns. Los Angeles improved their standings at 5-9 and secured their first division win since Week 17 of 2018.

Raiders vs. Chargers: 2020 Betting Trends

Week 14 Game Notes

  • The Chargers triumphed over the Falcons 20-17 in Week 14. As time expired, PK Michael Badgley’s 43-yard field goal sealed the win as Los Angeles covered one-point favorites. Justin Herbert completed 36 out of 44 pass attempts for 243 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception in that game. Meanwhile, RB Austin Ekeler added 79 rushing and 67 receiving.
  • Las Vegas suffered severely with a Week 14 home loss to Indianapolis 44-27. The Raiders’ defense had no answer to the Colts’ offense, as the Colts scored seven of their eight possessions and completed 212 rushing yards and no turnovers. Fortunately for the Raiders, QB Derek Carr threw for 316 yards with two touchdowns, while WR Nelson Agholor tallied a game-high 100 receiving yards on five receptions.

Week 15 Picks: ATS | Straight Up

Betting Odds: Raiders vs. Chargers

  1. Spread: The Raiders by 3.5
  2. Over/under: 53. 5
  3. Point spread odds: The Chargers +150, The Raiders -170

The Las Vegas Raiders started as field-goal favorites, with a minor increase in their favor. Meanwhile, Los Angeles played close games, win or lose. Here, the Raiders came in more desperate than the Chargers.

The Pick: Over 53.5

Las Vegas’ overs were 9-3-1 last season, tied with the Tennessee Titans for the best in the NFL. The Raiders were also averaging a league-high 57.0 points per game. Because of those stats, some bettors leaned toward the ‘over’ bet.

Three Trends Last Year

  • About 52% of spread bettors remembered how the Chargers fell short in the first matchup and believed they would also fizzle in their next game.
  • About 91% of over/under bettors thought the point total was too low, with too poor defenses and too potent offenses on the field.
  • The Las Vegas Raiders were 7-6 against the spread, with nine matchups going over. In contrast, the Chargers were 5-7-1 ATS, with seven of their games going over.

Three Things Bettors Watched Carefully

Last season, bettors paid close attention to the Raiders’ Josh Jacob and the Chargers’ Austin Ekeler’s touches. Ekeler had racked up 61 touches for 343 yards to boost the Chargers’ offense since he returned from injury in Week 12. Meanwhile, Josh Jacobs had 14 carries for 65 yards and a touchdown in the first meeting in Week 9.

Bettors also looked at Derek Carr’s drive with the Raiders. He had a terrible performance against the Falcons, but he was much better against the New York Jets. Carr needed an improbable late touchdown to avoid defeat. However, he made mistakes, resulting in the loss to the Colts.

Raiders vs. Chargers: How to Bet

Now that you know the betting odds, betting lines, and picks last season, you may have a better understanding of how NFL betting works. If you still have questions, SportsBetting.com has a 24/7 live chat service to assist you.

In this section, we will discuss two other betting strategies to get you started.

Moneyline

Moneyline bets are the simplest form of sports betting. Here, you choose which team will win. If you’re still confident about the Raiders’ ability to win outright despite their poor defense last year, then pick them. However, if you think the Chargers have the better chance this season because of their promising rookie QB, then place your bet on them.

With moneyline betting, there’s no point spread since you’re just picking the winning side. Placing a bet is simple with this option, but trying to understand how moneyline pays can be a bit complicated.

Both sides of each moneyline bet have a different payment schedule, making this sports betting type confusing at first. In moneyline, your favorite team is listed with a minus (-) sign, whereas the underdog is listed with a plus (+) sign.

Prop Betting

Prop betting is a bet which hinges on an individual player or specific events.

Do you like Mike Williams, the Chargers’ wide receiver? He performed well in last season’s Week 5 against the Saints and recorded his first career interception in Week 16 against the Broncos. How about the Chargers’ defensive end Joey Bosa? He also did well against the Buffalo Bills, recording three sacks on the Bills’ QB Josh Allen.

The Buccaneers, Jaguars, Packers, Rams, Giant, Patriots, the Baltimore Ravens, and other NFL Football teams have promising football players. You may want to visit the NFL website to learn more about them.

Sports betting is a fun and maybe even profitable activity involving different leagues, such as the NBA, MLB, NHL, and NFL.
