Cowboys vs. Bucs: All-Time Series and Stats
Bucs: The Unstoppable Defending Champs
From 1977 to 2018, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Dallas Cowboys have met each other 19 times. The Cowboys won 15 games, while the Bucs won four. Although historically, the Cowboys have had more wins than the Bucs, Tampa Bay is still hard to beat.
This year, the Bucs triumphantly defended their second Super Bowl title on the back of Tom Brady in the NFL (National Football League) Week 1 matchups. The Super Bowl champions opened the 2021 NFL season against the Dallas Cowboys at home on Thursday Night Football.
Tom Brady signed with Tampa Bay in free agency, and his first time playing for the Bucs drew plenty of attention. Brady is being pitted against fellow quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes.
Brady, who joined the Bucs in the offseason, secured his seventh career Super Bowl Championship. Tampa Bay opened a 6.5 point favorite against the Cowboys. The Bucs became the first NFL team to return all 22 starters after the 2020 Super Bowl LV victory.
In contrast, the Cowboys suffered a season-ending injury to Dak Prescott in NFL Week 5 last year. With Prescott as QB, the Dallas Cowboys were third in the NFL last season with 32.6 points per game.
Cowboys: Notable Opening Series
The Cowboys’ last foray into opening the NFL season against the defending champions was in 2012 when they faced their rival, the New York Giants. Dallas walked away with a 24-17 record that night.
In 2009, the Cowboys also won their first game of the season in Tampa. Romo threw for 353 yards and three scores in that matchup. It included one to Miles Austin right before halftime and an 80-yard touchdown to Patrick Crayton to break the game open.
Although Dallas lost to the Bucs this season, the Cowboys can quickly bounce back. In previous years, Dallas managed to enter the playoffs even if they didn’t win in an opening matchup.
