La Liga Betting
Interested in betting on La Liga, the premier Spanish football league?
Before you start betting on a Spanish soccer team, you need to learn more about professional La Liga betting.
We also give tips, such as team analysis and bankroll management, to boost your chances of winning your bet.
Why Bet on La Liga?
The Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División, commonly known as La Liga, is the leading professional football league in Spain.
There are many European soccer leagues like the Serie A, Bundesliga, English Premier League, and Ligue 1. But La Liga houses the Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid.
The team has bagged 13 championship titles, a record for the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) Champions League.
Spanish football players focus on technique rather than brute strength. Their quick passes of the ball will keep you on the edge of your seat.
The Spanish La Liga usually starts in August or September. With 38 matches to bet on per season, bettors have plenty of betting opportunities.

How to Bet on La Liga
We have a detailed explanation for each La Liga betting type below.
Moneyline Betting
Moneyline betting on La Liga means betting on the possible outcomes of the game.
A game could end with an outright winner or a draw.
Sports events, such as NBA, NHL, and NFL matches, have extra minutes of play whenever the game ends in a draw.
In Spanish football, there is no overtime. When the regulation time ends and the scores are tied, the match is declared a draw.
To better understand moneyline betting on La Liga, check out the 3-way moneyline betting odds for a match between Real Sociedad de Fútbol and Granada CF:
Teams |
Odds |
Real Sociedad de Fútbol |
-210 |
Granada CF |
+220 |
Draw |
+240 |
There are minus and plus signs in the odds. Bookmakers assign negative odds to the favorites, while they give positive odds to the underdogs.
Real Sociedad are the favorites to win the game. The team has higher chances of winning, but for you to earn $100, you’ve got to bet $210.
You can use this formula to calculate the payout if you bet on the favorites:
(Your bet ÷ odds × 100) + your bet = payout
For example, you bet $500 on Real Sociedad. If Real Sociedad wins, your payout is:
Your bet ÷ odds × 100 = 238 and
238 + your bet = $738 payout
Betting on the underdog results in a higher payout if the favorites lose the game.
If you bet on Granada CF, you can earn $220 for every $100 you bet if they win the match.
You can use this formula for positive odds:
(Your bet × odds ÷ 100) + your bet = payout
For example, you bet $500 on Granada CF. To calculate the payout if they win:
Your bet × odds ÷ 100 = 1,100
1,100 + your bet = $1,600 payout
Although the higher payout is tempting, betting on the underdog is risky because they have a lower chance of winning the game.
The 3-way moneyline betting allows you to bet on a match draw.
In our example above, a draw has higher positive odds than the underdog’s odds. It means the potential payout will be larger if the game ends in a tie.
If you bet $500 on a draw and the game ends in a tie, you can use this formula to compute your winnings:
Your bet × odds ÷ 100 = 1,200 and
1,200 + your bet = $1,700 payout
The potential payout of a draw yields $100 more than the potential payout of betting on the underdog team. But higher positive odds mean that a draw is less likely to happen.
Now that you know how moneyline betting odds work, why not try live betting while a La Liga game is ongoing?
Totals Betting
Another way to bet on La Liga betting is totals or over/under betting.
In this betting type, you don’t bet on the outright winner of the game. Instead, you predict if the game’s combined total score will be greater or lower than the points assigned by the bookie.
Below is a sample totals line for a match between Real Betis Balompié and Celta Vigo:
Team |
Totals |
Real Betis Balompié |
O 3.5 (-110) |
Celta Vigo |
U 3.5 (+120) |
The O or over in the totals column means the teams should have a combined score greater than 3.5 at the end of the game for you to win. While the U or under means the combined goals at the end of the game should be less than 3.5.
Let’s say that the game ends 3-1 in favor of Celta Vigo. Those who bet on the total score to be over 3.5 win.
For instance, you bet $300 on over. If the game ends with a total score of 4, you earn $100 for every $110 you bet.
You can also use the payout formula for negative odds:
Your bet ÷ odds × 100 or
300 ÷ 110 × 100 = 273
273 + your bet = $573 payout
If the game ends 2-1 in favor of Celta Vigo, the total goal will only be 3.
If you bet on the score to be over 3.5, you lose your bet since there is no 0.5 score in soccer.
If you bet $300 on the final total score to be less than 3.5, you can use the payout formula for positive odds.
You bet × odds ÷ 100 or
300 × 120 ÷ 100 = 360
360 + your bet = $660 payout

Point Spread Betting
A point spread evens the playing field.
For example, a game between Getafe Club de Fútbol and Levante Unión Deportiva ended 3-2 in favor of Getafe.
Here’s the point spread for the match:
Teams |
Spread |
Getafe Club de Fútbol |
-1.5 (+240) |
Levante Unión Deportiva |
+1.5 (-333) |
If you bet on Getafe, they have to win by 2 points or more for you to win your bet. For a bet on Levante to win, they should be the outright winners or lose by not more than 1 point.
For example, you bet $200 on Levante. Given the match’s outcome, you win your bet even if Levante lost the match.
Because Levante covered the spread, you can use the formula for negative odds to compute for your payout:
Your bet ÷ odds × 100 or
200 ÷ 333 × 100 = 60
60 + your bet = $260 payout
If you bet on Getafe, you lose even if the team won because they couldn’t cover the spread.
Let’s say the match ended differently.
You bet $200 on Getafe and the game ended 4-2 in favor of them. Your bet wins because the team won by 2 points.
To calculate the payout, here’s the formula:
Your bet × odds ÷ 100 or
200 × 240 ÷ 100 = 480
480 + your bet = $680 payout
Asian Handicap
The quarter-point spread can result in a hal win or half lose.
A half win means that you earn a profit based on half of the amount you bet, while a half lose means you get half of your stake back.

As an example, let’s use a 0.25 Asian handicap spread for a match between Athletic Bilbao and Valencia Club de Fútbol that ended in a draw:
Team |
Asian handicap |
Athletic Bilbao |
+0.25 (-145) |
Valencia Club de Fútbol |
-0.25 (+172) |
If you bet $200 on Valencia, half of your stake will be refunded, which is $100.
If you bet $200 on Athletic Bilbao, this results in a half win. To compute for half of your stake, here's the formula:
Half of your bet ÷ odds × 100 or
100 ÷ 145 × 100 = 69
69 + half of your bet + 100 = $169 payout
Let’s use another match, but with a 0.75 Asian handicap spread:
Team |
Asian handicap |
Cádiz Club de Fútbol |
+0.75 (-133) |
Deportivo Alavés |
-0.75 (+115) |
Suppose the match ended in a draw. If you bet on Alavés, you lose your bet. But if you bet on Cádiz, you have a winning bet.
Although Asian handicap betting can reduce the risk of losing your entire bet, it can also reduce the profit you earn.
A single-point advantage will result in a half win even if your chosen team wins the game.
Let’s say the match ended 2-1 in favor of Alavés.
If you bet $400 on Alavés, your bet results in a half win. Your earnings can be computed using this formula:
Half of your bet × odds ÷ 100 or
200 × 115 ÷ 100 = 230
230 + half of your bet = $430 payout
But if you bet $400 on Cádiz, half of your original stake is refunded because Cádiz only lost by a single point.
If Alavés scores more than 2 goals than Cádiz, the payout for your $400 bet on Alavés would be:
Your bet × odds ÷ 100 or
400 × 115 ÷ 100 = 460
460 + your bet = $860 payout
Not all betting sites offer Asian handicap betting on La Liga.
Futures Betting
In La Liga futures betting, you bet on the team you think will win the La Liga title.
You can bet before the La Liga season begins or during midseason.
If you decide to bet pre-season, consider looking at the teams’ most recent standings and performances.
When you check the stats, Real Madrid have the most number of La Liga championships in February 2021. Real Madrid are also the 2019-2020 La Liga champions.
But it doesn’t necessarily mean that you should always bet on the previous champions. A team’s performance can change in the middle of the season.
Let’s look at an example of a futures betting line during midseason:
Team |
Odds |
Club Atlético de Madrid |
-400 |
Real Madrid Club de Fútbol |
+500 |
Fútbol Club Barcelona |
+500 |
Sevilla Fútbol Club |
+10,000 |
Villarreal Club de Fútbol |
+50,000 |
The futures betting odds can change as the season progresses. In this example, Atlético Madrid has the highest chances of winning the title, as shown by the negative odds.
If you bet on high odds teams, such as Sevilla, you get more profit if the team wins.
If you bet $200 on Sevilla and they win the La Liga title, you earn a large payout.
To compute for your payout, you can use the formula for positive odds:
Your bet × odds ÷ 100 or
200 × 10,000 ÷ 100 = 20,000
20,000 + your bet = $20,200 payout
But it also doesn’t mean that you should bet on teams with the highest odds. Teams such as Elche Club de Fútbol, Sociedad Deportiva Eibar, and Real Valladolid have +450,000 odds.
The higher the odds assigned to a team, the lower their chances of winning the league.
Another thing to consider is that futures betting is a long-term bet. You need to wait for the season to end for you to get your payout if your chosen team wins the league.

Prop Bets
Propositional or prop betting focuses on what happened or didn't happen in the match and is not directly tied to the outright winner of the game.
Let’s look at the possible prop bets that can be made in a match between Atlético Madrid and Club Atlético Osasuna:
- Will Madrid score the first goal?
- Will there be a penalty awarded?
- Will Osasuna keep a clean sheet?
- Who will be the match’s top scorer?

La Liga Betting Tips
Choosing the Right Team
In La Liga betting, you need to research how each player and team play. Reading the latest La Liga odds and reviewing the team standings can also help you make informed betting choices.
Choosing a La Liga team with a balanced set of players is better than picking a team with the league’s best player.
Suppose FC Barcelona only have Lionel Messi as their prized player while their other players are not that good. If Messi gets injured, Barcelona will not perform well.
Managing Your Bankroll
In betting, going all-in might not be a great choice, especially in La Liga betting.
If you lose all your cash in the first game of the season, you won’t be able to bet on the other 37 matches.
Try to control your impulses and remember to bet only the amount you can afford to lose.
