Believe it or not, the marathon that is the MLB season is coming to an end and that only means the races for playoff berths will tighten up and things will really become interesting.
In the American League, the Boston Red Sox are the current Wild Card berth leaders, with a one-game lead over the Texas Rangers; online sportsbook SPORTSBETTING.COM has the BoSox listed at +700 to take the 2009 AL pennant and +450 to take the World Series.
A majority of the competition Boston will be facing down the stretch will be from within its own division, the AL East, and in its last eight games against divisional foes, it has struggled, going 2-6 straight up and 3-5 on the Over/Under.
Also on tap for the Red Sox, seven games against the Chicago White Sox.
In Boston's last 14 games overall against the ChiSox, it is 11-3 SU; in its last 10 home games it is 7-3 SU and 3-6-1 O/U and in its last eight road games is 6-2 SU and 5-3 O/U.
Yankees vs. Red Sox series
Sports bettors will be all over the late-September three-game series in New York, as these two hook up for what might, or might not be a relevant battle. Who knows, by then the Red Sox could be out of the race.
Boston's last trip to Yankee Stadium was painful for the team and for those who bet on them, as the Red Sox were swept by the Pinstripers as they went 0-4 SU.
Check out the site for great sports betting tips as that series gets closer as we will have a full analysis on it.
The BoSox conclude the regular season with a four-game home stand against the Cleveland Indians and in their last eight home games against the Tribe, the Sox are 6-2 SU and 5-3 O/U.
The Texas Rangers are hot on the heels of the Red Sox and as mentioned, a mere game behind in the Wild Card standings—Texas is +700 to take the pennant and are long shots to win the World Series at +3300.
Look at the remainder of Texas' sked and you will see a majority of matchups against its own division (AL West) and the AL East.
In the Rangers' last 10 tilts against the East, they've gone 9-1 SU and 2-8 O/U and in their last 16 games against divisional foes, they're 5-11 O/U.
Speaking of divisional rivals, the Seattle Mariners are also in the Wild Card race (6.5 games back) and Texas has six more games against the M's (three at home and on the road) including the final three games of the regular season.
The Rangers have been dominant the last nine times they've hosted the Mariners, going 8-1 SU with the Over/Under going 2-7 in the same time. Texas has also been solid when playing Seattle on the road, going 7-4 SU in its last 11 trips to Safeco Field.
The Tampa Bay Rays were the toast of MLB last year, winning the AL East as well as the AL pennant.
This year, the Rays aren't cruising at such high altitude but they are three-games back of the Wild Card lead.
Listed at +1000 to repeat as AL champs and +1500 to win the World Series, Tampa Bay will like many others, face a majority of divisional foes down the stretch.
The Rays have done well in their last nine against fellow teams from the AL East going 7-2 SU while going 2-7 O/U at the same time.
Tampa Bay will also play four road games and three home games against the Detroit Tigers during the final stretch.
The Rays have the edge in their last nine games against the Tigers going 6-3 SU.
Tampa Bay will close the regular season with a three-game home stand against the New York Yankees and in the Rays' last nine home games against the Yanks, they are 3-6 SU and 6-3 on the Over/Under.
It's been a long haul but the MLB season is about a little over a month away from concluding.
With few games separating Tampa Bay, Texas and Boston in the AL Wild Card race, you can expect some interesting baseball down the stretch.
Enjoy the rest of your week.
