Although we're not yet at Major League Baseball's All Star break, there are some interesting divisional races going on.
The St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers are duking it out for control of the NL Central division with the Cards currently ahead by two games—SPORTSBETTING.COM currently has St. Louis listed at +220 to win the division and Milwaukee is listed at +250 and guess who's currently embroiled in a three-game set?
The Cardinals drew first blood, winning 5-0 and going Under the Total of 8.
Going into Game 2, which goes tonight, online sportsbooks have the road team St. Louis is listed at +107, home side Milwaukee is listed at -127 and the Total is set at 9.5.
When at home, the Brewers have a slight edge head to head against the Cardinals with a record of 11-9 straight up but are currently in the midst of a three-game losing streak, including last night's 5-0 loss.
The Brewers will send Jeff Suppan to the mound while the Cards will counter with Todd Wellemeyer.
From his days with the K.C. Royals, through his time with the Pittsburgh Pirates right up to his current stint with the Brewers, Jeff Suppan is 9-3 SU and 4-2 SU at home against the Cardinals; he is also 2-4 on the Over/Under at home and 3-9 O/U overall.
Todd Wellemeyer is 1-4 SU against Milwaukee dating back to May of last year.
In one of pro sports' great rivalries, the New York Yankees are currently a single game behind the AL East division leading Boston Red Sox and while the Yanks and BoSox aren't playing each other, the Bronx Bombers can gain some ground if they sweep the Minnesota Twins.
The Twinkies did their part in the first game of the current series between the two, getting hammered 10-2 by the Yanks yesterday; the Pinstripes covered at -127 and the Total of 8.5 went Over.
It will be A.J. Burnett's turn in the Yanks' rotation while Glen Perkins will go for the home team Twins.
The Yanks have owned the Twins in the last 20 games going 14-6 straight up and have gone 5-0 in the last five games vs. Minnesota.
While New York has a winning record against Minnesota at the Metrodome, at 11-9 SU, it is also 2-4 SU in its last six. The Yanks are 3-2 SU vs. the Twins when Burnett takes the mound and in only four appearances against the New York Yankees, Perkins is 1-3 SU.
Tied at 46-36, the current series between the Texas Rangers and the Los Angeles Angels will definitely determine who is the best in the AL West.
After beating the Angels 8-5 SU last night—covering at +155—the Rangers are once again listed as underdogs at +110 while the Angels are -130 home favorites, the Total is set at 10.
In the last 20 games between the two overall, the Rangers and Angels are even Stephen at 10-10 SU and in the last 20 games in Los Angeles, the Angels have a slight 11-9 edge SU.
Vicente Padilla will go for the Rangers and in his last six starts in Anaheim, Texas is 4-2 SU.
In his last 13 games overall against the Angels however, Padilla is only 6-7 SU.
Ervin Santana will start in front of the home crowd and in his last five home starts against Texas; the Angels are 4-1 SU.
We're entering the dog days of summer and the fact that there are some tight divisional races bodes well for the coming months.
Enjoy the rest of your week.
